20190927 - Carcel hosted our class at their studio today and told us their story. Amazing inspired and deeply committed to the women they work with. I reminded myself that i know very little before i arrived and withheld my kneejerk reaction which was to decry the as lowlife exploiters of the marginalized. I was 180-degrees wrong. To the people repeating the “slave Labour critique” i would suggest learning a little more before casting Stones. Ask questions. I am a peace-loving lefty Canadian art nerd who is committed to a fairer future, and i believe organisations like carcel - progressive, realistic, hypersmart, humane, and extraordinarily helpful - would benefit by educated support, rather than knee-jerk dismissal.

Carcel takes advantage of impoverished women in the Global South for profit. They are paid minimum wage in their countries, not in Denmark, which is where the company is from. Their entire business model is based around women continuously going to prison, in other words, it's dependent on women being poor always. It's exploiting human beings. Take your money elsewhere.

Their entire business model is centered around cheap labor from imprisoned women in impoverished countries. That is pure modern slavery.
